After having lunch with Judge Learned Hand, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes entered his carriage to be driven away. As he left, Judge Hand’s parting salute was: “Do justice, sir, do justice.” Holmes ordered the carriage stopped. “That’s not my job,” Holmes said. “It is my job to apply the law.” Holmes wrote that his primary responsibility as a judge was “to see that the game is played according to the rules, whether I like them or not.”
