It is disingenuous to stake a claim of faith-based government on the thin reed the Constitution lacks the phrase, “separation of church and state,” a concept enshrined in the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.

Many founders of the republic were wary of the authoritarian proclivities of religious leaders, notably the Catholic Church. Pray if you want, but pray do keep it away from the affairs of state is a theme replete in the correspondence of Madison and Jefferson.

If the proclamation of Thanksgiving Day dictates government communion with faith, do we also commune with the doughnut on National Doughnut Day? And should we bow down to George Bush on April Fool’s Day?

It’s true “liberty, equality and freedom have certain biblical roots.” Those roots reside in the ancient world of Mesopotamia and later the city-states of Greece. Students of history know these concepts from Plato’s Dialogues, as in the Republic, written in 360 B.C.E.

The “suffering endured by those early colonists who dared to oppose the global superpower of that day” was pain they felt in their posterior, in the region of their wallets from taxation with the Stamp Act and duties on some type of brewed drink.

I am one who holds the “notion that survives only in historical ignorance,” but from my cave-like view I see your pronouncements as dancing allegorical shadows on my wall.
